A house does not get damp by accident. Water enters it through a short list of activities and defects, and nearly every one of them can be quantified well enough to rank.

That ranking is the most useful thing on this page, because it shows immediately that a handful of items dominate. A family of four generates two to three gallons of water vapor a day, and the avoidable share of that is large.

People and daily activity

Occupants are a constant, unavoidable source. The figures below are per day for a household of four, and they are the baseline every house has to handle.

The avoidable heavyweights

These are the ones worth acting on, because each is large and each has a straightforward fix. If a house is damp and any of these apply, start here rather than with equipment.

Moisture from the building itself

These are not activities and cannot be changed by habit. They are also the ones that make a dehumidifier run forever without ever winning.

What the ranking tells you to do

Look down the list for anything in the second table that applies to you. Those items are individually larger than everything a dehumidifier will remove in a day, and each has a fix costing between nothing and about twenty dollars.

Then check the third table. If any of those apply, no amount of habit change or equipment will settle the house — the water is entering the structure and has to be stopped there.

Only after both of those is it worth sizing equipment. A dehumidifier bought before this exercise is being asked to undo an unvented dryer, which it will do at your expense, forever.

Common questions

How much moisture does a family produce per day?

Roughly two to three gallons for a household of four from breathing, cooking, bathing and washing. Drying laundry indoors or venting a dryer inside adds two to four pints per load on top of that.

What is the biggest source of humidity in a house?

When present, an unvented dryer or laundry dried indoors — two to four pints per load. Where those do not apply, cooking and bathing share the top of the list, and in some houses a bare-earth crawl space beats everything.

Do gas heaters cause damp?

Unvented ones do. Burning any hydrocarbon produces water vapor — roughly a pint per litre of fuel — and an unflued heater releases all of it into the room.
