Laundry room humidity: the biggest moisture source in the house

No other room can add water to a house as fast as this one. A single load of laundry carries two to four pints of water, and where that water ends up is decided entirely by how the room is set up.

Vented outdoors, it leaves the building and nothing else happens. Vented indoors, or dried on a rack, all of it goes into your air — and then finds the coldest surface in the house.

Why the duct decides everything

A vented dryer takes the moisture it evaporates out of your clothes and pushes it outside. A ventless or condenser dryer condenses it into a reservoir or a drain instead, which also works. What fails is a vented dryer whose duct terminates in the laundry room, a wall cavity, a garage or an attic — a surprisingly common shortcut that delivers two to four pints per load straight into the building.

Drying on a rack or over a radiator is the same quantity, released more slowly. In a dry winter house that is genuinely useful. In an already-damp house it is the single largest thing you can stop doing.

The room itself adds to it. Washers leave standing water in the drum and gasket, and a front-loader with the door shut becomes a small persistent moisture source with a musty smell of its own.

Where the moisture comes from

  • A dryer venting indoors, into a wall cavity, a garage or an attic — 2 to 4 pints per load
  • Laundry dried on racks or radiators — the same amount, released over hours
  • A washer door and gasket left closed with water still in them
  • A utility sink and the damp mop, towels and cleaning gear stored around it
  • A room that is often unheated and closed off, so its surfaces run cold

What will not work here

  • An indoor dryer vent kit with a water bucket

    These capture lint, not moisture. Most of the water still goes into the room, which is what the bucket cannot hold.

  • A dehumidifier instead of a duct

    You are paying electricity to remove water a $20 duct would have sent outside for free.

  • Closing the room up to contain it

    The moisture does not stay put. It migrates to cooler rooms and condenses there instead.

  • Drying on a radiator in a damp house

    It is the same 2 to 4 pints, released into the room least able to take it.

Common questions

How much moisture does a dryer put into the house?

Two to four pints per load if it vents indoors — one of the largest single moisture sources in a home. Vented outdoors it adds nothing.

Are indoor dryer vent kits safe for humidity?

They catch lint but not water. Nearly all the moisture still enters the room, so they are a poor substitute for a duct to the outside.

Why does my washing machine smell?

Water sits in the drum and the door gasket between loads. Leave the door and drawer ajar, wipe the gasket, and run a hot maintenance cycle periodically.

Is drying clothes indoors bad?

It depends on your reading. In a house below 30% it is a free humidifier. In a house above 55% it is the first habit to change.
