When it does not work
The limits matter more than the benefits — this is where most money gets wasted.

They cannot beat water entering the structure
If a patch has a defined edge, sits low on a wall, or worsens after rain, no habit will touch it. That is structural damp and it needs a repair.

Ventilation reverses in humid weather
Airing out is free and effective in cool weather, and actively harmful on a warm muggy day. Check the outdoor air before opening anything in summer.

They do not warm a cold wall
Moving furniture restores airflow to a cold surface, which helps a great deal. It does not raise the surface temperature. If mold returns to the same spot anyway, you need insulation and heat.

Windows wide on opposite sides for 5–10 minutes, twice a day, in cool weather. Brief and wide beats a tilted window all day, which just chills the wall around it.

Cook and shower with the lid on
Pan lids, a squeegee in the shower, and towels hung somewhere ventilated rather than folded in a closed bathroom.

If the number has dropped, keep going. If it has not moved at all, the moisture is not coming from your household activity — go to the four causes.

The machine then spends its capacity undoing habits that cost nothing to change, and your power bill shows it.
Airing the house out on a muggy summer day
You import moisture. In humid weather the correct free action is to keep windows shut.
Turning the heating off in unused rooms
A cold, closed room collects the whole house's moisture on its cold surfaces. Low background heat and an open door cost less than the mold repair.
Treating a squeegee as the fix
Wiping condensation protects your window frames. It does nothing about why the air is that wet.
