The Mountain West gets two effects at once. It has genuinely cold winters, so the cold-climate rules about condensation apply in full — and it starts from air that holds very little moisture even before heating.
The result is the driest indoor environment in the country outside the desert Southwest, and a set of side effects people from sea level find surprising.
What altitude actually changes
Relative humidity itself is not altered by altitude — it is still a percentage of what the air can hold at its temperature. What changes is what the air arrives carrying. Air reaching Denver has usually crossed mountains that wrung most of the moisture out of it, so the absolute humidity is low before anything indoors happens to it.
Then evaporation runs faster at lower pressure. Water leaves any wet surface more readily at 5,000 feet than at sea level, which is why skin, lips, eyes and airways dry out noticeably faster and why laundry hung indoors dries quickly. The same effect lowers the boiling point — water boils near 203 °F in Denver rather than 212 — which is one reason cooking releases moisture a little differently.
Practically, this means a humidifier here works harder for the same reading, and the gap between "comfortable" and "condensing on the windows" is narrow because winter nights are cold. That is a demanding combination.

Drop the thermostat 1–2 °F. It raises relative humidity for free, and it matters more here than most places.
Dry laundry indoors through the winter — it evaporates fast at altitude and the moisture is useful.
Seal obvious drafts. Every air exchange here brings in air with very little moisture in it.
Two hygrometers: one in the living space, one in the coldest bedroom. The gap between them decides your humidifier setting.
A whole-house humidifier on the furnace, sized generously — at altitude a portable unit often cannot keep up with a whole floor.
Use distilled water or an evaporative unit. Much of the region has hard water, and ultrasonic humidifiers will coat the house in white dust.
Better glazing raises the ceiling. Here the constraint on comfort is usually the window rather than the humidifier.

Common questions
Does altitude affect indoor humidity?
Not the percentage itself, but two things around it: the air arriving has usually lost most of its moisture crossing mountains, and evaporation runs faster at lower pressure. Together those make indoor air noticeably drier and drying effects more pronounced.
What humidity should a house in Denver be?
30–40% in winter, dropping toward 25% in a hard freeze because cold nights make the windows the limiting factor. Higher is comfortable but puts water on the glass.
Why does my skin dry out so fast at altitude?
Lower air pressure speeds evaporation from any wet surface, including skin and airways, and the ambient air holds less moisture to begin with. Both effects push in the same direction.
