Humidifiers: fixing air that is too dry without overdoing it
If your reading is under 30%, add moisture and target 40–45%. Do not aim higher, and in freezing weather aim lower.
The short version. Heating does not remove water from your house. It raises the temperature, warm air can hold much more moisture, and the same water becomes a smaller percentage. That is the whole mechanism behind dry winter air.
Dry air is the mirror image of everything else on this site, and it is almost entirely seasonal. Outdoor air at 20 °F holds very little water. Bring it inside, heat it to 70 °F, and its relative humidity falls to somewhere around 15–20% without a drop of moisture being removed.
The symptoms are recognizable: static shocks, cracked lips, nosebleeds, a dry cough that is worst on waking, gaps opening in wood floors, and instruments going out of tune.

The only reliable fix for white dust
Four ways to add moisture
Evaporative humidifiers pull air through a wet wick. They are self-limiting — as the room approaches saturation, evaporation slows on its own — which makes them the hardest type to overdo. They need wick replacement and they are the noisiest.
Ultrasonic humidifiers vibrate water into a fine mist. They are quiet and efficient, but they aerosolize whatever is in the water: with hard tap water you get white mineral dust on every surface in the room. Distilled water solves it; nothing else reliably does.
Steam vaporizers boil water and release it as vapor. The boiling kills waterborne bacteria, which makes them the most hygienic option, and the warm output suits a nursery. They use the most electricity and present a burn risk.
Whole-house humidifiers mount on the furnace and humidify through the ductwork, controlled by a humidistat. They are the right answer for a whole dry house and they need annual servicing.

Too much humidifying puts water on your windows
In freezing weather, holding 50% indoors will condense on glass and window frames. When it is below about 20 °F outside, drop the target to 30–35%.

Standing water grows bacteria and mold, and ultrasonic units spray it into the room as a fine aerosol. Rinse daily, disinfect weekly, without exception.

Running it at maximum

Topping up instead of emptying
Adding water to old water grows a biofilm in the tank. Empty, rinse, refill.
Using tap water in an ultrasonic unit
That is where the white dust comes from, and you are breathing what it aerosolizes.
Ignoring the windows
Morning condensation on the glass is your signal that the setting is too high for the current outdoor temperature.
