This is the rare case where one setting does more than any amount of cleaning. Mites absorb water vapor directly through their bodies, so removing the vapor removes their water supply.

Dust mite allergy is the most common indoor allergy in the world, and it is the one most directly controlled by a number on a hygrometer. Mites feed on shed skin, which you cannot remove, but they drink from the air, which you can.

They have no mouth for liquid water. They absorb humidity through a gland, and below roughly 50% relative humidity they cannot take up water faster than they lose it. Sustained dryness does what no vacuum can.

What to do, in order

What the allergy actually reacts to

The allergen is not the mite. It is proteins in mite droppings and fragments, which are light enough to become airborne when a bed is disturbed and small enough to reach deep into the airways. That is why symptoms peak on waking and when bedding is changed.

Because the allergen persists after the mites are gone, killing the population is only half the job — the residue has to be washed and vacuumed out as well. That is the argument for doing both rather than choosing.

Dust mite allergy is a recognised driver of persistent asthma, and reducing exposure is one of the few environmental interventions with a plausible mechanism behind it. If symptoms are significant, this is a conversation to have with a doctor rather than a website.

Why are my allergies worse in the morning?

Does a dehumidifier help with dust mite allergies?

Yes, if it brings the bedroom below 50% and keeps it there. It removes the mites' water supply, which no amount of cleaning does.
