Seven humidity myths, measured

Most damp advice is repeated rather than checked. Here is each claim next to the quantity that settles it.

Almost every piece of advice on this list appears in articles that never state a quantity. That is the tell. Once you attach a number — ounces of water per day, degrees at the surface, percent relative humidity — most of them resolve immediately, and a few of them turn out to be backwards.

Seven claims, each with the figure that decides it.

1. "Houseplants dehumidify a room"

Backwards. Plants transpire: between 90 and 99 percent of the water they take up through their roots leaves through their leaves as vapor, into your room. A well-watered plant is a slow humidifier.

The claim usually cites the 1989 NASA clean air study, which measured removal of volatile organic compounds in sealed chambers — not moisture. The full version of this one is here.

2. "A bowl of rock salt will dry out the room"

Right mechanism, wrong scale by a factor of several hundred. Salts do absorb water — that is real chemistry. A calcium chloride tub, the strongest of them, removes about one ounce a day.

A 30-pint dehumidifier removes 480 ounces a day. A single load of laundry dried indoors releases 32 to 64. Absorbers are the right tool for a closet, a safe or a boat locker, and close to decorative in a room. The measured comparison, including charcoal and baking soda.

3. "Bleach kills mold"

On tile, yes. On drywall, no. Household bleach is roughly 5–8% sodium hypochlorite in water. The active ingredient reacts with the first organic matter it meets and stays near the surface; the water it is dissolved in soaks into the porous material and feeds the filaments underneath.

You get a bleached-looking patch above living growth. Undiluted white vinegar or 3% hydrogen peroxide penetrates instead. The mechanism in full.

4. "Open a window to reduce humidity"

True for maybe half the year, depending on where you live. The comparison that matters is absolute moisture, not the percentages on either side of the glass.

Indoors at 70 °F and 62% is about 68 grains of water per pound of air. Outdoors at 45 °F and 80% is about 35 — ventilating halves your moisture. But outdoors at 85 °F and 70% is about 127 grains, nearly double what is inside, and opening up imports water your air conditioner then pays to remove. Check today rather than guessing.

5. "A bigger air conditioner will fix a clammy house"

It usually makes it worse. An AC removes moisture only while the coil is running. An oversized system reaches the thermostat setpoint fast and shuts off, so it produces short cycles, little run time and very little dehumidification.

The house ends up cool and clammy — 74 °F at 65% humidity. What dehumidifies is run time, not tonnage: a variable-speed system, a lower fan speed, or a dehumidifier handling the latent load directly. This is the defining problem of hot-humid climates.

6. "If there is no visible water, mold cannot grow"

Mold does not need liquid water. It germinates at around 80% relative humidity at the surface it is growing on, given time and ordinary dust to eat.

Because relative humidity is relative to temperature, a room at 70 °F and 55% is already at 78% against a surface at 60 °F, and above 90% against one at 55 °F. Your hygrometer reads a comfortable 55% while the corner is over the line. This is why growth appears on walls that always look dry.

7. "Turn the heating up to dry the house out"

Half right, and the missing half matters. Heating does lower relative humidity, because warm air can hold more water — the same moisture becomes a smaller percentage. It removes no water at all.

So the air feels drier while the total moisture is unchanged, and the moment it touches a cold surface it condenses exactly as before. Worse, short evening bursts of high heat leave wall surfaces cold overnight. Steady low heat plus ventilation dries a house; cranking the thermostat mostly moves the problem.

The takeaway. When a damp fix comes without a quantity, supply one. Ounces per day, degrees at the surface, grains per pound — most of these claims settle themselves the moment a number is attached.

Common questions

What is the most common piece of wrong humidity advice?

That opening a window always reduces humidity. It depends entirely on whether outdoor air holds less water per pound of air than your indoor air, which reverses seasonally in most of the US.

Do any natural dehumidifiers actually work?

Calcium chloride and silica gel genuinely absorb water, at roughly an ounce a day. That is useful in a closet or a safe and negligible in a room.

Can mold grow at 50% humidity?

In the room, no. At a cold surface within that room, yes — a wall 10–15 °F below room temperature can sit above the 80% surface humidity mold needs while the room reads 50%.
