Why modern dehumidifiers are rated for fewer pints

The machines did not get weaker. In 2019 the test moved from 80 °F to 65 °F, and the labels got honest.

If you replaced a basement dehumidifier recently you may have noticed the numbers went backwards. The 70-pint unit you remember has become a 50-pint unit, and the shelf no longer seems to carry anything as capable as what you had.

Nothing shrank. The way capacity is measured changed, and the new number is closer to what you actually get.

What changed in the test

Dehumidifier capacity is measured in pints of water removed per day under standard conditions. Until 2019, the US Department of Energy specified those conditions as 80 °F and 60% relative humidity. That is warm — warmer than most basements, which is where most dehumidifiers actually live.

The revised procedure tests at 65 °F and 60% relative humidity. Because a compressor dehumidifier works by chilling a coil below the dew point, it removes less water from cooler air. Same machine, cooler test, lower number.

The rough conversion is that a unit rated 70 pints under the old test lands around 50 under the new one. A 50-pint became about 35, and a 30-pint became about 20.

Why this is an improvement

The old figure flattered every machine, and it flattered them most in exactly the conditions people bought them for. Someone buying a "70-pint" unit for a 62 °F basement was never going to see anything close to 70 pints.

The new rating is measured nearer to real basement conditions, so the number on the box is closer to what the machine will actually do in the place you put it.

How to use old advice safely

Plenty of sizing charts still circulating online were written against the old ratings, which is why they recommend numbers that look enormous next to what is on the shelf today. If a chart tells you a 1,000 sq ft damp basement needs 70 pints, it is an old chart.

One thing has not changed: if the space drops below 65 °F, a compressor unit ices up regardless of its rating, and you need a desiccant model instead.
