When opening a window makes your humidity worse

Outdoor air at 80% can be drier than your indoor air at 60%. It can also be much wetter. The percentage alone cannot tell you which.

The most repeated piece of damp advice is to open the windows and let the house breathe. In cold weather it is close to a law of nature. In humid summer weather it makes things worse, and almost nobody says so.

The reason is that relative humidity — the number on your hygrometer and in your weather app — cannot be compared directly between two places at different temperatures.

Relative humidity is a percentage of a moving target

Warm air can hold much more water vapor than cold air. Relative humidity tells you what fraction of that capacity is used, so the same percentage means completely different amounts of water depending on temperature.

That is why 80% outdoors on a cold day can be drier, in absolute terms, than 50% in your living room — and why 70% outdoors on a hot day is far wetter than 60% in your air-conditioned house.

Two worked examples

A cold day. Indoors: 70 °F at 62% humidity, which works out to about 68 grains of water per pound of dry air. Outdoors: 45 °F at 80% humidity — about 35 grains. The outdoor air holds roughly half the water. Bring it in, warm it to 70 °F, and it sits near 32% relative humidity with enormous spare capacity. Ventilating dries the house.

A humid summer day. Indoors: 72 °F at 55% humidity, about 64 grains. Outdoors: 85 °F at 70% humidity, about 127 grains — nearly double. Open the windows and you are importing water, which your air conditioner then pays to remove.

Same advice, opposite outcomes, and the relative humidity percentages give you no warning: in the second case the outdoor number (70%) is barely higher than the indoor one (55%), while the actual moisture content is twice as high.

The rule that actually works

Compare absolute moisture, not relative humidity. If outdoor air holds less water per pound of air than your indoor air, ventilating helps. If it holds more, ventilating hurts. Our window calculator does that comparison from four numbers you already have.

As a rough field rule without any calculation: if it is meaningfully colder outside than inside, opening up will dry the house. If it is warmer and muggy outside, keep the windows shut and use a dehumidifier or the air conditioning instead.

One caveat worth keeping. Ventilation does more than manage moisture — it clears CO₂, cooking odors and indoor pollutants. Even on a day when it will not dry the house, a short airing is still worth doing for air quality. Just do not expect the hygrometer to fall.

Does opening a window always reduce humidity?

What should I do instead of opening windows in summer?

Keep them closed during humid weather, run the air conditioning on a normal cooling cycle, and use a dehumidifier for spaces the AC does not reach — especially the basement.
