Airflow. Still air is the multiplier people forget. A wet patch behind a bookcase or under a fitted carpet dries far more slowly than the same patch in the open, which is why growth so often starts in the places nobody is looking at.
What to do inside the window, and after it
Inside 48 hours the goal is simple: get everything dry. Remove standing water, lift wet carpet and pad rather than drying it in place, open cavities that trapped water, and run fans and a dehumidifier aggressively. Measure rather than guess — surfaces that feel dry can still hold enough moisture to sustain growth.
